18 Jul Find the right words
When you’re talking to your customers, it’s important to find the right words. But would you give them a “chef’s kiss”? Or maybe tell them something gives you “the ick”? It’s probably unlikely. But maybe you should.
These are just two examples of the 3,200 words that have been added to the Cambridge Dictionary this year. (You can read more here.) Language is evolving all the time.
But do you change the language you use in business?
It seems obvious, but language is a really simple way to demonstrate that you are relevant to the people you are talking to. Whether that’s a conversation with one person, or communication with an entire customer category.
Using the “wrong” language might make customers feel you don’t really understand them. They might think you don’t have the knowledge or insight to solve their problem. Or they might simply be left confused by the words and phrases you use.
As a result they will chose to spend their money with someone else.
This doesn’t mean that you should jump on every linguistic trend in an attempt to fit in. But it might be worth looking at your customers and considering whether there is an opportunity to change.
If you would like to have a chat about the language you use and how to change it, it would be great to hear from you.
We’ve been doing this for (almost) 20 years, so we’re always happy to share some of that experience. We make time in our schedule every week for these conversations, so drop us a message and we can arrange something.
